Public Service Lawyering - Understanding Your Impact Through Pro Bono Service

Wednesday, October 7, 2020 from 6-8pm via Zoom

The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) Invites all students to attend the Florida Bar Government Lawyers Section (GLS): Public Service Lawyering: Understanding Your Impact Through Pro Bono Service. The GLS has recently engaged in a law school outreach initiative to discuss with future lawyers across the state the many benefits of lawyering in public service; including the importance of strategies for developing mentorship relationships early in our career, the value of being active in the Florida Bar, and other voluntary bar associations, among other topics.

The Claude Pepper Outstanding Government Lawyer Award

The purpose of the Claude Pepper Award is to recognize a lawyer who has made an extraordinary and exemplary contribution as a practicing government lawyer. The award is named in honor of the Honorable Claude Pepper, a Florida attorney, United States Senator, and United States Congressman, who was an advocate on behalf of the people, and who represented the highest ideals of government service through twelve presidential administrations.

The Section congratulates Chair-elect Anthony B. Miller!

Anthony B. Miller

Our current chair-elect was recently appointed to the Leon County Court. Anthony B. Miller is the General Counsel and Chief Ethics Officer for the Florida Agency for State Technology (AST). He has practiced administrative law for approximately 19 years for several state agencies - Department of Financial Services (formerly Department of Insurance), Department of Corrections, Department of Management Services, Florida Lottery, and the Agency for State Technology. From 2015 to 2018, he also served as a Commissioner with the Florida State Retirement Commission. In September 2018, the Leon County Commission appointed him to serve on the Leon County Educational Facilities Authority.

He completed his undergraduate studies in political science at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1995. He graduated from the FSU College of Law in 2000. He is active in the Florida Bar. He is the Chair-Elect of the Florida Bar Government Lawyer and also the Chair of the section’s CLE Committee. He is an Executive Council member of both the Government Lawyer and Administrative Law sections. He is a member of the Florida Bar’s Continuing Legal Education Committee. The Florida Bar President recently appointed him to serve on the Governmental and Public Policy Advocacy Committee.

Miller fills the vacancy created by the governor’s appointment in March of Judge Stephen Everett to Leon County Circuit Court.

E-filing software updates to address uniformity concerns

A coming change to the Florida courts e-filing portal is aimed at making it easier for lawyers to choose the “document type” when they are electronically filing court documents.
